We take a look at the goods that were imported into South Africa from January 2019 to November 2019. And the bulk of South Africa's imports is made up by two categories, namely machinery and equipment and mineral products.

So lets take a look at the composition of South Africa's imports from January 2019 to November 2019. As mentioned in the introduction the bulk of the goods imported into South Africa is dominated by machinery and equipment and mineral products. But the question is what else is being imported into South Africa and how much of it (in terms of Rand value and percentage of overall imports) is imported. So the largest single biggest import category that was imported into South Africa from January 2019 to November 2019 was Machinery with it making up 22.48% of the total imports into South Africa during this period. That equates to a value of R266 billion in Machinery being imported into South Africa from January 2019 to November 2019.
The second biggest import product category being imported into South Africa is Mineral products, with it making up 16.75% of South Africa's total imports from January 2019 to November 2019, that equates to R198 billion in Mineral Products being imported. The main product we import under Mineral Products, is crude oil, which makes up R194 billion of the R198 billion in Mineral Products being imported.
The second biggest import product category being imported into South Africa is Mineral products, with it making up 16.75% of South Africa's total imports from January 2019 to November 2019, that equates to R198 billion in Mineral Products being imported. The main product we import under Mineral Products, is crude oil, which makes up R194 billion of the R198 billion in Mineral Products being imported.

Other significant import product categories for South Africa
Chemicals
So while Machinery and Mineral Products makes up almost 40% of total goods being imported into South Africa from January 2019 to November 2019 there are other significant product categories that we have not mentioned before. The third biggest import category is Chemicals, with it making up 10,67% of total imports into South Africa for the time period in question. That 10.67% translates into a total Rand value of R126 billion, with R32.3 billion of the R126 billion being made up by Pharmaceutical products being imported.
Vehicles, aircraft and vessels
Coming in in a close 4th position behind Chemicals is Vehicles, aircraft and vessels with it making up 9.26% or R110 billion in imports from January 2019 to November 2019
Equipment components
This is the 5th biggest import product category which makes up 8.78% or R104 billion in imports from January 2019 to November 2019 and is made up completely by vehicle component imports which is imported by vehicle manufacturers for the production of vehicles on various vehicle assembly lines in South Africa, from the BMW Rosslyn plant to the Volkswagen plant in Port Elizabeth

The 6th biggest import product category into South Africa for the period January 2019 to November is Products of Iron and Steel, which made up 5.02% or R59.5 billion of total imports into South Africa from January 2019 to November 2019.
