We take a look at the lastest results released in the 2018 General Household Survey (GHS) and what it says about languages spoken in South Africa.

GHS languages spoken and inside and outside the house per race group
So what does the latest GHS tell us about the various languages spoken in South Africa inside and outside of the house per race group? The table below shows the percentage of people per race group speaking various languages.
So based on the table above 0.9% of Black Africans people speak Afrikaans inside the house, and 1% of Black Africans speak Afrikaans outside the house. The majority language spoken by Black African people inside the house is isiZulu, with 31.1% of Black Africans reporting that they speak isiZulu inside the house. 18.2% of Black Africans reported that they speak isiXhosa inside the house. 11.1% of Black Africans reported that they speak Setswana inside the house.
77.4% of Coloured people reported that they speak Afrikaans inside the house, while 68.8% reported that they speak it outside the house. 20.1% of Coloured people reported that they speak English inside the house, and 28.3% reported that they speak English outside the house.
Looking at Indian/Asian people 1.3% reported that they speak Afrikaans inside the house, while 92.1% reported that they speak English inside the house, and 4% reported that they speak "other" languages inside the house.
Looking at White people, 61.1% reported that they speak Afrikaans inside the house, while 37.2% reported they speak Afrikaans outside the house. 36.3% of White people reported that they speak English inside the house. And 61% of White people reported that they speak English outside the house. 0.5% of White people reported that they speak isiZulu inside the house, and 0.5% reported that they speak isiZulu outside the house.
