We take a look at data supplied by Statistics South Africa in which we compare the average price per kilogram per province of some of South Africa's favourite meats to braai. We take a look at the prices of:
  • Rump
  • Pork Chops
  • Chicken
  • Boerewors
  • Lamb Chops

We also compare the average price per kilogram of the various types of braai meats across the various provinces.

So how much is that braai meat setting South Africans back?

In our continued series on average prices and inflation of various goods and services often consumed by South Africas, in today's update we take a look at the popular meats being braaied. A couple of weeks ago we looked at the pricing behaviour of  various snacks consumed ahead of or during a braai or get together. The bar chart below shows the average price per kilogram per province of the various popular meats mentioned at the start of this article.
chart created with amCharts | amCharts
From the graphic above it is clear to see that the average price per kilogram of lamb chops is far higher than any of the other meat prices. Note there is no lamb prices in Limpopo as it does not form part of the consumer price index (CPI) basket of Limpopo. Its exclusion is due to the fact that not enough money is spent by those living in Limpopo in lamb to warrant inclusion in the CPI basket.

The summary below shows the average price of lamb chops per kilogram per province (as at January 2019):
  • Gauteng: R170.35
  • Mpumalanga: R169.37
  • Free State: R163.91
  • Northern Cape: R159.61
  • KwaZulu-Natal: R158.40
  • Western Cape: R157.56
  • North West: R150.43
  • Eastern Cape: R145.54
And for once the Western Cape does not pay the most for a particular product. As we showed with our average beef fillet prices article the other day, the Western Cape paid by far the most for beef fillet, and in general, as we have mentioned in our Inflation Heat Map page, the Western Cape has the highest inflation levels of any of South Africa's provinces. Gauteng pays the most for lamb chops per kilogram at R170.35 while the Eastern Cape pays the least at R145.54 a kilogram. The average across South Africa for a kilogram of lamb chops works out R159.40

The summary below shows the average price of rump per kilogram per province (as at January 2019):
  • Western Cape: R141.25
  • Free State: R135.81
  • Gauteng: R131.78
  • Northern Cape: R129.17
  • Mpumalanga: R128.21
  • Eastern Cape: R128.09
  • Limpopo: R125.65
  • KwaZulu-Natal: R118.39
  • North West: R114.24
Sad for those living in the Western Cape, when it comes to rump they pay on average the most per kilogram of rump, at R141.25 while the North West pays by far the least per kilogram of rump at R114.24. The average across South Africa for a kilogram of rump works out R128.06

Next up we take a look at South Africa's most consumed meat, which is Chicken. What is the average price paid per kilogram of chicken by the various provinces?

The summary below shows the average price of chicken per kilogram per province (as at January 2019):
  • Eastern Cape: R53.85
  • Western Cape: R52.79
  • Gauteng: R47.41
  • Free State: R47.26
  • Northern Cape: R47.21
  • Mpumalanga: R46.59
  • Limpopo: R44.54
  • North West: R43.32
  • KwaZulu-Natal: R41.82
From the above and the bar chart at the top it is clear that chicken is by far the cheapest meat type in South Africa, and perhaps why it is the most consumed meat type in South Africa. The average price of a kilogram of chicken is roughly 3.5 times less than that of lamb chops. The average cost per kilogram of chicken across South Africa is R47.19 a kilogram.

Boerewors comes in as the second cheapest meat type (of the ones we are looking at in this article) with the average price across South Africa per kilogram of boerewors coming in at R59.25

The summary below shows the average price of boerewors per kilogram per province (as at January 2019):
  • Eastern Cape: R65.34
  • Mpumalanga: R63.34
  • Western Cape: R60.19
  • Northern Cape: R59.99
  • Free State: R58.87
  • North West: R58.31
  • Gauteng: R57.87
  • KwaZulu-Natal: R56.37
  • Limpopo: R52.99

The Eastern Cape pays on average the most per kilogram of boerewors at R65.34 a kilogram while Limpopo pays the least with a average price paid per kilogram of R52.99

And lastly we take a look at pork chops, a less popular cheap cut of meat which is gaining popularity due to its cheap price, but can become extremely dry if overcooked. The average cost per kilogram of pork chops across South Africa is R79 a kilogram.

The summary below shows the average price of pork chops per kilogram per province (as at January 2019):
  • Western Cape: R87.27
  • Limpopo: R83.09
  • Mpumalanga: R82.12
  • Gauteng: R80.64
  • KwaZulu-Natal: R79.3
  • Free State: R78.6
  • Northern Cape: R75.08
  • North West: R74.16
  • Eastern Cape: R70.85

The Western Cape pays the most for pork chops per kilogram at R87.27 while the Eastern Cape their neighbour pays the least for pork chops at R70.85 per kilogram.
So lets have a bit of fun. Let us assume you a meat lover and you will be consuming the following amounts of meat this weekend at a braai or get together:
  • 100 grams rump
  • 100 grams  lamb chops
  • 100 grams pork chops
  • 100 grams boerewors
  • 100 grams chicken

How much would it cost you to consume the above meats per province? We show the results below (note because Limpop does not have lamb as part of their basket we use the national average price as proxy for lamb chop prices in Limpopo). The summary shows the amount of money that would have to be spent to buy 100grams of each of the meat types mentioned at the start of the article per province
  • Western Cape: R49.91
  • Mpumalanga: R48.96
  • Gauteng: R48.81
  • Free State: R48.45
  • South Africa: R47.29
  • Northern Cape: R47.11
  • Limpopo: R46.57
  • Eastern Cape: R46.37
  • KwaZulu-Natal: R45.43
  • North West: R44.05

Once again those in the Western Cape will end up spending the most, with the cost of buying 100grams of all the meat types being R49.91 (13.3% more money) than what those living in the North West will pay (R44.05) for 100grams of the same meat
