So how much is that braai meat setting South Africans back?
In our continued series on average prices and inflation of various goods and services often consumed by South Africas, in today's update we take a look at the popular meats being braaied. A couple of weeks ago we looked at the pricing behaviour of various snacks consumed ahead of or during a braai or get together. The bar chart below shows the average price per kilogram per province of the various popular meats mentioned at the start of this article.
From the graphic above it is clear to see that the average price per kilogram of lamb chops is far higher than any of the other meat prices. Note there is no lamb prices in Limpopo as it does not form part of the consumer price index (CPI) basket of Limpopo. Its exclusion is due to the fact that not enough money is spent by those living in Limpopo in lamb to warrant inclusion in the CPI basket.

Next up we take a look at South Africa's most consumed meat, which is Chicken. What is the average price paid per kilogram of chicken by the various provinces?

Boerewors comes in as the second cheapest meat type (of the ones we are looking at in this article) with the average price across South Africa per kilogram of boerewors coming in at R59.25

The Eastern Cape pays on average the most per kilogram of boerewors at R65.34 a kilogram while Limpopo pays the least with a average price paid per kilogram of R52.99
And lastly we take a look at pork chops, a less popular cheap cut of meat which is gaining popularity due to its cheap price, but can become extremely dry if overcooked. The average cost per kilogram of pork chops across South Africa is R79 a kilogram.

The Western Cape pays the most for pork chops per kilogram at R87.27 while the Eastern Cape their neighbour pays the least for pork chops at R70.85 per kilogram.

How much would it cost you to consume the above meats per province? We show the results below (note because Limpop does not have lamb as part of their basket we use the national average price as proxy for lamb chop prices in Limpopo). The summary shows the amount of money that would have to be spent to buy 100grams of each of the meat types mentioned at the start of the article per province
Once again those in the Western Cape will end up spending the most, with the cost of buying 100grams of all the meat types being R49.91 (13.3% more money) than what those living in the North West will pay (R44.05) for 100grams of the same meat

Once again those in the Western Cape will end up spending the most, with the cost of buying 100grams of all the meat types being R49.91 (13.3% more money) than what those living in the North West will pay (R44.05) for 100grams of the same meat
