So you sitting at a braai, or at dinner at a friend's place and you snack away at biltong, potato crisps, savoury biscuits and the likes. Or grabbing a block of chocolate after dinner. Ever wondered which one of these items prices increases the fastest?
We compare the year on year inflation rate of various snacks in South Africa over time. Note the data comes from Statistics South Africa's Consumer Price Index (CPI). |

The line graph below shows the year on year inflation rate for Biltong, savory biscuits, potato crisps and chocolate slabs from January 2018 to November 2018. So which one of these snacks have the highest inflation rate?
And the winner is... Biltong. The average annual inflation rate of Biltong is far greater than that of any of the other snacks looked at in this article. The only snack coming close to the inflation rate of Biltong is potato crisps of better known in South Africa as chips. The inflation rate of savoury biscuits and chocolate slabs are far more subdued.
Below the average inflation rate for the various snacks since January 2018:
So to chocolate lovers, the prices of chocolate slabs has actually decreased when compared to a year ago. To biltong lovers. Sadly that packet of biltong you are eating now is about 8.6% more expensive than it was a year ago. Looking at the price movements from the start of 2017, the earliest date for which the data was made available by Statistics South Africa the price increase from January 2017 to November 2018 is shown below:
So biltong is roughly 19.5% more expensive in November 2018 than what it was in January 2017. While Potato crisps (chips) is 12.2% more expensive in November 2018 than what it was in January 2017. Savory biscuits are 6.8% more expensive and chocolate slab prices actually declined by 1.4% from January 2017 to November 2018. So guess at the next braai or dinner there will be less biltong served and more chocolates being provided.
