Since the festive season and the holidays are upon us we take a look at the latest average prices of various items that will be consumed a lot over the festive season, and they all start with a B. Beer, Brandy, Biltong and Biskuit aka rusks.

Average prices per province of various festive season favourites
So as part of our continued average prices articles, we have decided to take a look at the average price per province of various products that are consumed in large amounts over the festive season. These items are Beer, Brandy, Biltong and Biskuit. We will take a look at the average price paid per province as well as the year on year growth rate in the average price paid per province for these particular items. Let's start with one of our personal favourites, Beer. The summary below shows the average price paid per 6 pack (340ml) beer per province. (The number in brackets shows the year on year growth rate in the average price)
- Western Cape: R 74.36 (3.2%)
- Eastern Cape: R 66.25 (-2.5%)
- Northern Cape: R 67.67 (-1.2%)
- Free State: R 63.99 (-1.6%)
- KwaZulu-Natal: R 66.58 (-4.2%)
- North West: R 73.98 (10.9%)
- Gauteng: R 70.52 (2.3%)
- Mpumalanga: R 69.21 (3.1%)

Next up we take a look at the average price paid per province for a 750ml bottle of brandy. (The number in brackets shows the year on year growth rate in the average price)
Those living in the Free State pays by far the most for a 750ml bottle of brandy with the average price topping over R200, while the Western Cape pays the least on average for a 750ml bottle of brandy, with the average bottle in the Western Cape costing just over R150. Those in the Free State pay 36.3% more on average for a bottle of brandy than those in the Western Cape. This is the exact opposite of the finding regarding beer, where those in the Western Cape paid the most and those in Free State the least

Those living in the Free State pays by far the most for a 750ml bottle of brandy with the average price topping over R200, while the Western Cape pays the least on average for a 750ml bottle of brandy, with the average bottle in the Western Cape costing just over R150. So now we move away from some of the popular drinks that will be consumed during the festive season and focus on some of the snacks that will be enjoyed a lot during the holidays. First up its Biltong. The summary below shows the average price per kilogram of biltong per province. (The number in brackets shows the year on year growth rate in the average price)
The Western Cape is the province with the highest average price per kilogram of biltong with it coming in at over R350 a kilogram, while the Free State paid on average the least per kilogram of Biltong with it coming in at around R240 a kilogram. Those in the Western Cape paid on average 45.9% more per kilogram of biltong than those in the Free State.
So after having a few beers, drinking a number of brandy's and snacking on biltong there is the morning after. And with your cup of coffee you and the family will in all likelihood snack on a few biskuits (rusks) as a pre breakfast snack. The summary below shows the average price per 500g box of biskuit (rusks). (The number in brackets shows the year on year growth rate in the average price).
Those living in KwaZulu-Natal pays the most for a box of rusks at just under R42 a 500g box of rusks, while those living in Mpumalanga pays the least with the average price per 500g box of rusks coming in at R34.85. Thus the average box of rusks costs 20.4% more in KwaZulu-Natal than it does in Mpumalanga.
So our advise for the festive season.. Buy your beer and biltong in the Free State, buy your Brandy in the Western Cape and your rusks in Mpumalanga. If you are unable to follow this advise at least be safe this festive season and dont drink and drive.
