We take a look at the latest numbers from the Annual Financial Statistics (AFS) survey published by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA). We will focus on the net profit margin of the various industries and company sizes. Ever wondered which industries are the most profitable in South Africa, or whether smaller companies are more profitable than larger companies in South Africa?

Mirror mirror on the wall, who has the highest profit margin of them all?
The interactive graphic below shows the net profit margin (profit after taxes expressed as a percentage of a company's turnover). Basically how much profit a company makes for every R100 in turnover it gets in. Please note all figures refers to the AFS for 2017 as published by Stats SA.
The graphic above, as a starting shows the average net profit margin of all industries, for all company sizes. As soon as users click on a slice of the pie chart, the graphic recalculates and shows the net profit margins for the various industries for the particular company size selected. Below the net profit margin per company size and per industry.
Small Companies:
So the most profitable industry for small firms in 2017 was the Community, social and personal services, with a net profit margin of 13.6%. The least profitable industry for small firms is the Mining and quarrying industry with a net profit margin of -0.7%
Medium Companies:
The most profitable industry for medium sized firms in 2017 was the Forestry and Fishing industry with a net profit margin of 10.6% and the least profitable industry for medium sized firms was the Electricity, gas and water industry with a -8% net profit margin. So serious losses suffered in this industry by medium sized firms.
Large Companies:
The most profitable industry for large firms in 2017 was the Financial intermediation, real estate and business services industry with a net profit margin of 21.3% and the least profitable industry for large firms was Trade industry with 2.9% net profit

- Forestry and Fishing: 7.9%
- Mining and Quarrying: -0.7%
- Manufacturing: 4.7%
- Electricity,Gas and Water: 8.9%
- Construction: 3%
- Trade: 2.1%
- Transport, Storage and Communication: 5.1%
- Financial Intermediation,Real Estate etc: 7%
- Community,Social and Personal Services: 13.6%
- Total for All Industries: 3.9%
So the most profitable industry for small firms in 2017 was the Community, social and personal services, with a net profit margin of 13.6%. The least profitable industry for small firms is the Mining and quarrying industry with a net profit margin of -0.7%
Medium Companies:
- Forestry and Fishing: 10.6%
- Mining and Quarrying: 4.3%
- Manufacturing: 4.1%
- Electricity,Gas and Water: -8%
- Construction: 2.4%
- Trade: 1.8%
- Transport, Storage and Communication: 6.1%
- Financial Intermediation,Real Estate etc: 9.3%
- Community,Social and Personal Services: 7.7%
- Total for All Industries: 3.6%
