In this article we take a look at South Africa's top 20 export destinations. Who are we exporting our goods too? And what percentage of our total exports are made up by countries such as China, United States of America or Japan?
We take a look at the numbers below. And a few countries in the Top 20 might surprise. |
Top 20 export destinations
The bar chart below shows the Top 20 export destinations to whom South Africa exports goods. And no real surprise is the fact that China is our biggest export destination, with it making up 11% of South Africa'total exports.
The United States is a distant 2nd place with 7.7% of South Africa's exports heading to the United States. Germany just behind the United States with 7.6% of South Africa's exports heading to Germany. Japan and India rounds out the top 5 with 5.1% of South Africa's exports heading to both Japan and India. The top 5 export destinations for South Africa for March 2018 made up 36.3% of South Africa's total exports. Thus more than a third of South Africa's exports heads to only 5 countries.
So percentages are one thing. But the real question is what is the Rand value of the exports heading to the Top 20 destinations. For those that prefer to see the values in text instead of a graphic, the total value of South Africa's exports for March 2018 to the Top 20 export destinations are shown below:
Surprising to us to make the Top 20 list was Belgium, Spain and Pakistan. We will take a look whether they feature in coming months and also investigate what exactly are exported to these countries. And remember to take Netherlands figures with a pinch of salt, as the exports are not actually all heading to Netherlands, but it goes via the Rotterdam port into the rest of Europe, so Netherlands figures tends to be overstated.
