We take a look at South Africa's customs data and focus on cellphones. Where are the cellphones we are using coming from, how many units are imported and what is the value of such imports? We take a closer look below.

Cellphone import origins
So have you ever wondered where the cellphone you are using to surf this website with or the one you constantly whats app and instagram on comes from? In which country was the phone you are using manufactured and assembled in? Surely not in South Africa as our manufacturing capabilities are dwindling and we doubt Apple, Samsung or Huawei would manufacture phones in a country that has rolling black outs with a fancy name called "load shedding".
Phones and parts of phones are manufactured in a whole host of countries. We extracted all the tariffs used to classify cellphones by the customs agency and then calculated the total number of phones and the value of said phones per month per country. While there was a whole host of countries for this analysis we will focus on the substantial contributing countries to South Africa's total cellphone imports. But lets look at the overall numbers first. The line chart below shows the total value of cellphones being imported, the total number of phones being imported as well as the average cost per unit being imported.

So now that we have an idea of how many cellphones are being imported and what the total import value of these phones are, lets take a look at the main countries these phones come from. The pie chart below shows the relative contribution of various countries to total South African cellphone imports since the start of 2014. And no real surprise that China makes up the bulk of the value of cellphones imported into South Africa. The surprise for many I am sure is the country in 2nd position.
The summary below shows the total Rand value of cellphone's imported from various countries since the start of 2014. With China making up almost 70% of the total value of cellphones imported into South Africa since the start of 2014, and Vietnam the surprise package in 2nd place making up 21% of total value of cellphones imported into South Africa.
