We take a look at the latest data published by Statistics South Africa relating to retail trade sales and we focus on the contribution by outlet type to total retail trade sales.
Is there a specific outlet type whose relative contribution to retail trade sales have increased over time, or is there a specific outlet type whose relative contribution to retail sales have declined over time? Or has the contribution of the various outlet types remained stable over time? |
Retail sales relative contribution by outlet type over time
The stacked bar chart below shows the relative contribution of the main retail outlet types, as categorised by Statistics South Africa over time.
From the bar chart above one can see that the biggest contributor to retail trade sales are General Dealers, those outlet types that sell a wide variety of items and they dont specialise in a particular product of category. One of the big retailers that falls into this category would be Makro. In 2008 general dealers made up around 43% of total retail trade sales. In 2018 so far the general dealers makes up 42.6% of total retail trade sales. It has experienced a slight decline from 2008 to 2018, but it is still by far the biggest contributor to retail trade sales.
The second biggest contributor to total retail trade sales is Textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods retailers, with these outlet types making up 15.6% of total retail trade sales in 2008. For 2018 so far, the textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods retailers makes up 17.2% of total retail trade sales. A slight increase over time in the contribution of these outlet types to total retail trade sales.
Another category that has seen growth in its relative contribution to retail trade sales is Pharmaceutical and medical goods,cosmetics and toiletries. In 2008 this category contributed 6.7% to total retail trade sales. So far in 2018, the pharmaceutical and medical goods,cosmetics and toiletries category contributes 7.9% to total retail trade sales. This category is dominated by outlets such as Clicks and Dischem.
