Temporary Resident Permits
The first section of today's blog will take a look at the temporary resident permits (TRP's) issued by South Africa during the year 2015. The bar chart below shows the number of TRP's issued by South Africa in 2015, as well as the reason for why it was being issued.
In total South Africa issued just over 75 000 TRP in 2015, with almost a third of them being issued under the reason "Visitor". "Relative" is the second most used reason with about 30% of permits being issued under this reason. In 3rd place is "Study", with about 17% of TRP's in SA being issued under the reason "Study". Foreign students coming to study in South Africa. So now that we know how many TRP's were issued in South Africa, the next question is where do the people these TRP's were issued to come from?
The graphic below will look to answer that question.
Nigeria is the country to whom the most TRP were issued in 2015, with it making up 13.8% of all TRP's issued, Zimbabwe is the country the second most TRP's were issued to, with it making up around 13.1% of all TRP's issued. The top 10 countries to whom TRP's were issued (as shown in the graphic above), makes up 67.3% of all TRP's issued.
Permanent Resident Permits
The following section takes a look at all Permanent resident permits (PRP's) issued by South Africa in 2015. The bar chart below takes a look at the number of PRP's issued and the reasons for why it was issued. In total South Africa issued 6 397 permanent resident permits in 2015.
The bar chart above clearly shows that the majority of permanent resident permits were issued under the reason "Work" with it making up 68% of all PRP issued. "Relative" came in as the second most used reason for issuing PRP's with it making up around 21% of all PRP's issued during 2015. All other reasons accounts for about 11% of PRP's issued.
As can be seen from the bar chart the majority of PRP's issued by South Africa in 2015, was issued to Zimbabweans, with 2 152 PRP's issued to them (or roughly 33.6%) of all PRP's issued in 2015. In a distant 2nd place is India with 619 (or about 10%) of all PRP's issued during 2015.
While these are official temporary and permanent resident permits issued, we are sure there are thousands and thousands of illegal immigrants entering South Africa under the premise of coming for a holiday or a visit and then never leaving the country again. Placing additional strain on South Africa's already limited resources and public funds.
