We take a look at the 10 biggest commodities being imported into and exported out of South Africa (for March 2016). The two pie charts below shows the 10 biggest commodities, the value and the percentage each commodity makes up of the total value of the 10 biggest commodities being exported or imported

The pie chart to the right shows the 10 biggest products (in terms of Rand value), being imported into South Africa. The largest being crude oil (accounting for almost 30% of the value of the 10 biggest commodities being imported).
Second place belongs to OEC parts for motor cars. Car parts being imported into South Africa and the cars being assembled here. Think BMW's massive plant in Rosslyn. Interesting to note the large contributions made by Cellphones (and Cellphones Other Items). Essentially this covers all smart phones and devices that assists with the transfer of voice, data and images. So wifi devices will be included in these tariffs. |

The pie chart to the right shows South Africa's 10 biggest export products (in terms of Rand value). As expected with South Africa being such a mineral rich country, a large chunk of our exports belong to minerals and commodities. The largest export for March 2016 was non-monetary Gold. Amounting to about R8.7billion and contributing 25% of the value of the 10 biggest exports for the month. Ferro-Alloys coming in second with R4.7billion and Coal third with R4.25billion.
Interesting to note platinum came in 6th place (and it only being the fifth biggest commodity being exported). The rest of the top 10 not made up by commodities are mostly vehicles and related goods. |
