In today's blog we take a look at South Africa's inbound tourism numbers. While we have a Tourism page on our website (it is not updated as regularly as we wanted, but it does have nice animated graphics so we thought we should add the graphic to on of our blob posts while giving readers an update into SA's inbound tourism numbers

Where is SA's tourists coming from?
The animated graphic below shows some of South Africa's biggest overseas inbound tourists are from. Thus major African inbound tourism countries are excluded from this animated graphic (except our West African friends Nigeria). Whether Nigerians coming into South Africa as tourists or them coming here to make a living is a story for another day.
Tourism is regularly punted as one of South Africa's major job creators and that greater focus should be placed on it in order to diversify South Africa's commodity based economy. According to numbers released by Statistics South Africa roughly 1 out of 22 people in South Africa is employed in the Tourism or Tourism related industry.
As the animated graphic shows a relatively large number of inbound tourists is from the UK, with them topping well over 50 000 tourists in the month of December 2016 alone. While Germany, France and Netherlands are hover between 10 000 and 14 000 odd tourists for December 2016. Australia (one of SA's biggest rivals in terms of sport) saw a slight increase in the number of tourists arriving in SA compared to twelve months prior.
In December 2016, South Africa received 31 309 tourists from the United States of America. Compared to 28 691 in December 2015. Averaging around 28 000 tourists a month from the USA means that around 336 000 people from the USA came to South Africa in 2016.
China on the other hand does supply South Africa with only a handful of tourists (when one considers their population size). In December 2016 only 7 425 tourists arrived here from China (less than the 7 983 for December 2015).
India in the same vain as China (massive populations) and relatively small number of tourists from India, with their numbers for 2016 and 2015 being 6 581 and 6 354 respectively.
In total though inbound tourists into South Africa (including all African countries) during December amounted to 1 554 048 for the year (compared to 1 547 900 in 2015). An increase of 0.3% (that's growth even slower than South Africa's economic growth rate).
