In today's blog we take a look at South Africa's registered live vehicle population. We take a look at the numbers both in terms of fuel type and per province. We then dig a little deeper and calculate a concentration of vehicles per square km of each province. The results below.

Petrol vs Diesel?
So we are sure many readers are wondering which fuel type is the most common on South African or specific provinces roads. Well the stacked bar chart below shows the split between petrol and diesel per province and for the country as a whole. And it's pretty clear, there is only one winner. And that is Petrol. These numbers are also reflected in the new CPI weights where Diesel carries a weight of about one fifth of that of petrol. See CPI weights wheel here.
As the bar chart above shows that around 80% of vehicles in each province is petrol compared to about 20% of vehicles that are diesel. Another clear indicator supplied by the bar chart is the fact that by far the largest number of vehicles are registered in Gauteng with it having well over 4million vehicles while the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal hover just above and below 1.5million vehicles respectively.
The bar chart below shows the number of vehicles per square kilometer per province and again it is clear that Gauteng has by far the most vehicles per square kilometer. It is no surprise then that there are so many traffic jams and that commuters take so long to get to the office each day. As there is just to many vehicles on Gauteng's already crowded roads.
In our commute time article that can be found here, we mentioned the following "We start off by taking a look at the economic powerhouse of South Africa, Gauteng. The gauge graph below shows five different time groups, and the percentage of employees that falls into each of these categories.
Gauteng has the highest proportion of employees out of all the provinces for two categories namely 31-60min and 61-90min, with 35.4% and 8.6% of employees in these respective categories. Proof of overcrowded roads in Gauteng leading to endless traffic headaches for Gauteng commuters"

While the number of new vehicle sales have slowed, it wont address the overcrowding of South Africa's roads in major city centres. In particular in Gauteng. The provincial and national transport departments will have to drastically address transport (both private and public) infrastructure if it is to sustain/maintain or improve the current state of affairs across all major city centres but with particular focus on Gauteng as the province seems to be bursting at the seems when it comes to number of vehicles per square kilometer of space.
