In today's blog we take a look at the percentage of each South African municipality that is over the age of 50. And find that the Western and Northern Cape has the most number of municipalities with a large portion of the population with the age of over 50 years old. Suggesting that a large number of older people stay in these provinces, further evidence that the Western Cape is the preferred retirment destinations for South Africans.

Old populations in Northern and Western Cape
The interactive map below shows the percentage of people over the age of 50 years per municipality. The size and the colour of the dot representing the relative percentage. The bigger and redder the dot the larger the percentage of people in that municipality that is over the age of 50 years.
The most noticable thing one sees when looking at the map is the large cluster of red dots in the Northern and Western Cape provinces. With a large number of municipalities in these two provinces with a substantial part of the population over the age of 50. It has been said a lot of times that people work in Gauteng, only to go and retire in the Western Cape. And look at this map it looks like there is certainly some truth to it.
The other observation one makes is the large amount of small dots in KwaZulu-Natal. Clearly indicating that there are a lot more "young" people in the various municipalities of KwaZulu-Natal.
This is only the start of our continued series of providing greater detail of South Africa's municipalities (as we did with our SA language map) earlier in the year. We hope readers continue to benefit and find the information presented interesting and informative and help people not only in South Africa but across the world gain a greater understanding into this stunning and diverser country that is South Africa.
