The interactive map below shows the number of tourists entering South Africa from the United States of America for April 2018 (scroll over the target in the USA to see the number travellers from the USA, or scroll over the target in South Africa to see the total number of inbound tourists arriving in South Africa during April 2018. For April 2018, 32 097 tourists arrived in South Africa from the United States. In total 1 298 709 tourists arrived in South Africa during April 2018, of which the majority those came from other African countries. Overseas arrivals in South Africa amounted to 228 097 tourists. Of overseas arrivals in South Africa during April 2018, the United States made up 14.1% of overseas arrivals in South Africa during April 2018.
So has tourists from the United States coming to South Africa increased over time? If not the question is why not? If the South African government is focussing on the tourism industry to grow and contribute positively why are we not getting more tourists from one of the countries which has the highest number of tourist travelers in the world.
Below a summary of the tourists coming from the United States per month for the last couple of months. And sadly it doesn't look like South Africa is doing enough to promote South Africa as a great tourist destinations to Americans, as the numbers have not increased substantially over time.
While the numbers above are pretty volatile and season dependent, the underlying fact remains that South Africa is not showing strong growth of tourist numbers from the United States, and this should be a focus area and country for the South African government if they are to support the tourism industry to achieve the potential they believe it can achieve. American citizens have the means to travel, and South Africa should tap into what seems to be a largely untapped market for South African tourism.
