So in which provinces are agricultural activities from households most prevalent?
Based on data supplied by Statistics South Africa, the table below shows the percentage of households who engaged in various agricultural activities. Based on the table below Limpopo had the highest percentage of households who engaged in agricultural activities during the past 12 months while the Western Cape had the lowest prevalence of households who engaged in agricultural activities over the last 12 months. Below the ranking of the provinces households engaged in agricultural activity:
- Limpopo: 41.2%
- Eastern Cape: 30.2%
- Mpumalanga: 25.4%
- KwaZulu-Natal: 18.2%
- Free State: 16.9%
- South Africa: 15.6%
- North West: 8.7%
- Gauteng: 4.5%
- Western Cape: 2.8%
The biggest category of agricultural activity that households participated in was "Fruit and vegetable production" with 8.3% of households in South Africa being involved in this type of activity. Small veggie gardens for own consumption springs to mind where people grown their own veggies to eat at home and not necessarily for reselling. 23.7% of households in Limpopo was involved in this activity while only 2.2% of the households in North West was involved in "Fruit and vegetable production".
Another popular agricultural category is "Grains and food crops" with 8.1% of households in South Africa actively involved in this activity during the last 12 months. Households growing their own wheat, maize, corn etc. 30.3% of households in Limpopo being involved in this, while only 0.1% of households in the Western Cape was involved in the production of "Grains and food crops".

Interesting to note is the fact that almost 20% of households in the Eastern Cape reported being involved in poultry production during the last year. Far higher than the 0.1% of households in the Western Cape and the 0.2% of households in Gauteng that reported being involved in poultry production during the last 12 months.
