South Africa's Exports to the rest of the world (for 2016)
The map is interative. Users can scroll over the bubbles to obtain more information. Users can also select the category of exports they want more information on. The default option is all exports (the various categories can be selected in the top right corner of the graphic).
It's clear when looking at the default map, that shows total exports for all goods for 2016, South Africa's three biggest export markets being China, Germany and United States of America. With two of BLNS (Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland) neighbours contributing a fair amount to exports too, with those two being Botswana and Namibia.
However it is when one selects the various categories that the picture becomes a lot more interesting too look at. For example selecting Animals and vegtable fats shows that Zimbabwe is by far the biggest importer of this product from South Africa, with them importing R715million worth of Animal or vegtable fats so far in 2016. Other big markets for this product from South Africa being Zambia, Botswana and Namibia.
For South Africa's chemical exports, the United States is South Africa's biggest export market so far in 2016, with total chemical exports amounting to R5.5billion. Interestingly Belgium another big importer of chemicals from South Africa with total chemical exports to Belgium totalling R2.9billion so far in 2016.
Live Animal exports from South Africa sees quiet a few big markets for South Africa. They include:
Namibia : R913million
Italy : R878million
Spain : R836million
Hong Kong : R670million
Mozambique : R985million
South Africa exports a large amount of machinery to Germany and USA (about R9.8billion and R7.8billion respectively).
So why is China our main export market when looking at the total level, but when looking at the above examples China hardly features. Well thats because China dominates our exports for the following products:
Mineral products: R40.3billion
Products of Iron and Steel : R18billion
Textiles: R1.99billion
Wood, pulp and paper: R3billion

Interestingly our largest market for exports of vegtables is the Netherlands. This result is a bit skewed, as Rotterdam in Netherlands is a pass through point into Europe. This that result for exports of vegtables to Netherlands should be looked at with caution as Netherlands is merely the point of entry of the goods into Europe.
Another interesting observation is the fact that South Africa exported R27billion worth of "Vehicles, aircraft and vessels" to Germany. South Africa has a number of German car manufacturing plants. We import the parts, assemble the vehicles and then ship some of these vehicles back to Germany where its then distributed for sale. A large number of right hand drive (RHD) vehicles are exported back to Germany and then sold in the United Kingdom where they use RHD cars.
Feel free to play with the map and discover more about South Africa's exports and the countries they export too.
