We take a look at South Africa's trade with both South and North Korea for the first 9 months of 2018 (January to September 2018). While trade with South Korea is far greater than trade with North Korea there is some trade between South Africa and the reclusive North Korea.

South Africa's trade: North vs South Korea
Ever wondered what we import from South Korea or export to them? Or what we export to North Korea or even import from North Korea. We take a look at the trade numbers for both South and North Korea for the first 9 months of 2018. The bar chart below shows South Africa's exports to both North and South Korea from January to September 2018.
Note on the graph above exports to North Korea are shown on the left hand axis and exports to South Korea on the right hand axis. South Africa exports a large amount of mineral products to South Africa. South Africa exported R10.6 billion in mineral products to South Korea so far in 2018, while just over R6 million in mineral products were exported to North Korea. South Africa exported R3.6billion in products of iron and steel so far in 2018 to South Korea, while they exported just under R400 000 worth of products of iron and steel to North Korea. South Africa also exported around R1.6 billion in vehicles, aircrafts and vessels to South Korea. But as we will see in the graphic below South Africa imported far more in terms of vehicles, vessels and aircrafts from South Korea than what they exported to them.
A clear winner in terms of imports into South Africa is the imports of vehicles, vessels and aircraft. With South Africa importing more than R3billion in this category into South Africa from January 2018 to September 2018. Coming in a close second is the import of machinery and equipment tp the value of R2.8billion from South Africa. South Africa also imported R1.8mill worth of machinery and equipment from North Korea.
South Africa also imports various plastics and rubbers from both South and North Korea. with South Africa importing more than R1 billion worth of plastics and rubbers from South Korea and R344 000 odd from North Korea. Textiles worth almost R500 000 was imported from North Korea while South Africa imported almost R260 million of textiles from South Korea.

The above shows that South Africa's trade with South Korea dwarfs that of North Korea, because of North Korea's reclusive nature and the multitude of sanctions imposed against North Korea.

The above shows that South Africa's trade with South Korea dwarfs that of North Korea, because of North Korea's reclusive nature and the multitude of sanctions imposed against North Korea.
