Nationwide lock down announced and is to last until 16 April 2020
The president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa has announced a nationwide lockdown that will start from 25 March 2020 and will last for 21 days. Only critical and essential services will be allowed to operate and consumers is to stay in their homes and only leave their homes in order to buy food or get medical help or supplies.

The numbers for South Africa is relatively low compared to other countries across the world, but one has to wonder whether this is due to not enough tests being conducted or the processing of test results just taking long to complete. Or are South African less susceptible to contracting Coronavirus due to its vaccine programs?
29 March 2020: South Africa's coronavirus cases still growing exponentially
As South Africa enters its 3rd day of a 21 day lock down due to the Coronavirus the number of official reported cases of Coronavirus is increasing sharply in South Africa. This does not mean that the lockdown in South Africa isn't working. The virus has an incubation period of up to 14 days. So people might have contracted Coronavirus (in the last two weeks) without being aware of it, and they could have passed it on to numerous other people without even being aware of it. And they are only starting to show symptoms now or being tested now. And that is the main reason confirmed cases are increasing exponentially in South Africa right now.

28 March 2020: 1187 cases of Covid-9 in South Africa on interactive map
The total number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in South Africa is now at 1187 and the bulk of the cases are in Gauteng, which is no real surprise as its South Africa's most populated province. It also has the highest population density (number of people per square kilometer). See more on South Africa's population density here

24 March 2020: Cases up to 554 in South Africa now
The line graph below shows why there is a 21 day lockdown that will commence on Thursday night. the number of new confirmed cases are increasing exponentially and the only way to save the health system from being overburdened and to save many many lives is to place the country in lockdown for a couple of weeks. Rather be safe than sorry. The South African government is taking the right approach.
23 March 2020: Coronavirus in South Africa over time
The line chart below shows the number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in South Africa over time. Since the first official case was reported in South Africa the spread of Coronavirus has increased steadily to the current 402 confirmed cases (up by 128 cases or 31.8% since yesterday 22 March 2020). And the number is expected to increase substantially as more and more people get tested for the Coronavirus and many of those that already have it do not know they have it and continue to pass it on to others.
While seeing the total number of cases of positive Coronavirus tests, the map below shows the number of Coronavirus cases per province in South Africa as at 22 March 2020. As time goes on we will update the map and place it on a loop so that readers can track the spread of Coronavirus across South Africa and its provinces over time. Currently of the 402 positive Coronavirus cases in South Africa, the bulk (just more than half) of the cases are in Gauteng. As the map shows the darker the red the colour the higher the number of Coronavirus in that particular province

Tips to limit potential contraction of Coronavirus in South Africa:
- Gauteng: 207 (up by 75 cases)
- Western Cape: 100 (up by 12 cases)
- KwaZulu-Natal: 60 (up by 24 cases)
- Free State: 13 (up by 4 cases)
- Mpumalanga: 9 (up by 3 cases)
- Limpopo: 4 (up by 3 cases)
- North West: 4 (up by 4 cases)
- Northern Cape: 2 (up by 2 cases)
- Eastern Cape: 2 (unchanged)
Tips to limit potential contraction of Coronavirus in South Africa:
- Avoid going to crowded places and spaces
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water
- Use hand sanitiser regularly
- Avoid touching your face with you hands, especially your eyes, mouth and nose
- If you are sick or have flu like symptoms. Stay at home and call your doctor for advise, do not go out and mingle with people when you are feeling sick as this might increase the risk of spreading Coronavirus, if you have it, it might be passed on by yourself to others.
