We take a look at a horizontal chart showing the sentiment towards a number of shares listed on the JSE. The sentiment graphic will take a look at the sentiment towards the following shares:

So sentiment looks rosy for all the above shares?
Well not really. The horizontal graph below shows the sentiment towards various shares listed on the JSE. Sentiment is measured in this case by price increases. The stronger the price increases, the better the sentiment, and the more the price declines the weaker the sentiment.
So how to interpret the graphic?
Light green: Marginal price increase since the start of the selected time period
Light blue: Reasonable price increase since the start of the selected time period
Dark blue: Strong price increase since the start of the selected time period
Light pink: Marginal price decrease since the start of the selected time period
Medium pink: Meaningful price decrease since the start of the selected time period
Dark pink: Strong price decrease since the start of the selected time period
Note the sentiment shown in the graphic as default is the sentiment over the last 12 months. Users can change the dates at the bottom left of the graphic or select pre-set dates at the bottom right of the graphic.
So how to interpret the graphic?

As mentioned earlier the default date for the graphic above is the last 12 months. And users can see immediately for which shares sentiment has been positive and negative. For the majority of the time period, sentiment has been negative for the following shares:

The neutral sentiment is shown by the very light colours and no real peaks which shows share prices have not move substantially to the up or down side over the course of the last 30 days. Taste (TAS) however has been continuously hammered by the market as Mr Market fears about the future of the group. While looking at 30 days sentiment is useful and interesting. What does the sentiment towards the above mentioned stocks look like when looking at them over a longer period such as 2 years? The image below shows the sentiment towards the 6 shares mentioned at the start over the course of the last two years.
- Naspers (NPN)
- Steinhoff (SNH) - Strong positive sentiment shown for SNH over the last month as shown by the dark blue colour
- FirstRand (FSR)

The picture above speaks a thousand words. Only two out of the 6 shares have shown any significant positive sentiment and price growth over the last two years. They are:
The dark blue colours and sustained dark blue colours shows that the share prices of NPN and FSR has continuously stayed well above their share prices of two years ago.
The rest of the shares have all struggled to keep their share price levels achieved two years ago.
- Naspers (NPN) - Continued growth from Tencent pulling Naspers along
- FirstRand (FSR) - Lower interest rates means less defaults on loans which means more profits for local banks such as FirstRand
The dark blue colours and sustained dark blue colours shows that the share prices of NPN and FSR has continuously stayed well above their share prices of two years ago.
The rest of the shares have all struggled to keep their share price levels achieved two years ago.
- Steinhoff (SNH) - originally had a bit of positive sentiment towards them two years ago, but since then it has been a gradual and then sudden decline in sentiment as news broke about SNH's dodgy dealings and Marcus Jooste's resignation and implication in the dodgy dealings.
- Taste (TAS) - Its not been a pretty picture for them over the last two years. Cost of rolling out Domino's pizza and Starbucks in SA killing their cash flows and they struggling to keep afloat.
- MTN - their legal issues and struggling operational performances in risky countries such as Iran and Nigeria has not help their share price one bit
- BTI- tougher laws on smoking across the world and ever increasing taxes in tobacco products as well as a flourishing illegal markets hurting this giant
