Land Transport Survey results for March 2019
First up, lets take a look at Freight Transport. What freight are we transporting in South Africa, and how are we moving the freight. Is it moved by road or by rail? The summary below shows the income earned from Freight transport:
Breaking down total income earned from freight between road and rail the numbers shows the following:
- Primary mining and quarrying products: R 5 014 000 000
- Manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products: R 1 691 000 000
- Other freight: R 1 549 000 000
- Chemicals, coke, petroleum, rubber, plastic and other mineral products: R 976 000 000
- Agriculture and forestry primary products: R 865 000 000
- Containers: R 633 000 000
- Basic metals and fabricated metal products: R 472 000 000
- Used household and office products: R 352 000 000
- Motor vehicles, parts and accessories: R 313 000 000
- Non-metallic products: R 273 000 000
- Commercial products: R 263 000 000
- Parcels: R 209 000 000
- Textiles, clothing and leather products: R 195 000 000
- Electrical machinery, transport machinery and equipment: R 147 000 000
- Paper and paper products: R 91 000 000
- Total: R 78 873 000 000
Breaking down total income earned from freight between road and rail the numbers shows the following:
- Road freight transport: R 61 941 000 000
- Rail road freight transport: R 16 931 000 000
Looking at income earned from the transportation of people we find the following:
So in terms of income earned from land transport freight transport earns far more than income earned from passengers, part of the reason for this is the fact that a large portion of South African citizens own their own cars and hardly ever use other forms of transport. So how many journeys or trips are undertaken each month using road or rail in South Africa? For March 2019:
- Income earned from rail passenger transport: R 1 022 000 000
- Income earned from road passenger transport: R 200 000 000
- Total income earned from passenger transport: R1 222 000 000
