Age distribution per race group
The line chart below shows the age distribution per race group in South Africa based on the 2017 mid year population estimates published by Statistics South Africa.
So from the graphic it is pretty clear that Black/African population has a far higher percentage of its total population in younger age groups while their white counterparts have a far greater portion of their population in older age groups, showing a aging white population in South Africa, while the Black/African population is relatively younger. Is it a case of white South Africans not having a lot of children anymore? Or the Black/African population just having more children per household than white families?
Indian/Asians are also showing higher proportions of their population in older age groups, lying just below whites in the age groups from 45 years and upwards, but still well below the proportions of older age groups as reported by whites. Coloureds are just below Black/Africans in the younger age groups, showing they too have a relatively younger population compared to whites and Indian/Asians.
The highest percentage of each race group's population is reported in the following age groups:
Black/Africans: 0-4 years old (11.1% of their population belongs to this age group)
Coloureds: 0- 4 years old (9.8% of their population belongs to this age group)
Indian/Asian: 30-34 years old (9.7% of their population belongs to this age group)
Whites: 45-49 years old (7.6% of their population belongs to this age group).
Mid year estimates for 2018 will be published pretty soon by Statistics South Africa, after which we will update this graphic to see if there has been any significant changes over the last year.
