Income is increasing, but at a snails pace
The graphic below takes a look at the total income earned by various enterprise sizes for the last two quarters, and while it shows that income earned by enterprises in South Africa increased in the June 2018 quarter compared to the March 2018 quarter, the growth rate is very very low.
In total South African enterprises earned R2.416 trillion in income during the first quarter of 2018. (January 2018 to March 2018). This increased slightly in the second quarter of 2018 (April 2018 to June 2018) to R2.475 trillion in income earned. This represents an increase of 2.41% over the first quarter of 2018. Large enterprises made up 61.7% of total income earned in the second quarter of 2018, with small enterprises making up roughly 29% of income earned and medium enterprises bringing up the rear with just 9.1% of the income earned during the second quarter of 2018. The graphic below shows the total expenses paid per enterprise size for the last two quarters,
In a very similar picture to income earned, large enterprises made up 60.8% of all expenses paid, while small enterprises paid 29.7% of all expenses and the medium enterprises paying 9.49% of all expenses during the second quarter of 2018. Total expenses increased from R2.282 trillion in the first quarter of 2018, to R2.385 trillion in the second quarter of 2018, reflecting an increase of R103 billion in expenses, or a increase of 4.52%.
So while firms income earned increased by 2.41% from the March 2018 quarter to the June 2018 quarter, over the same period of time, firms expenses went up by 4.52%. Which clear shows the kind of pressure South African firms/enterprises are under.
