We take a look at two different data sources from Statistics South Africa and use them to estimate just how much money households spent on various products during the 4th quarter of 2018.

So what do South African's spend their money on?
Ever wondered what South Africans spend their hard earned money on? Or have you ever wondered just how much money do South Africans spend on say white bread, milk, eggs or any of these type of products? In this article we estimate how much money South Africans spend on every day goods and services they consume during a particular quarter.
So we will use the CPI weights to estimate a proportion of each R100 spent, that is spent on various products (For more on the latest inflation numbers see our inflation heat map) And we will multiply the weights by the estimate of Household final consumption expenditure per quarter as published by Statistics South Africa's GDP release (for the latest GDP numbers see our SA GDP page). By combining these two data sources we get a pretty accurate estimate of just how much money South Africans spend on a wide variety of goods and services they consume.
So below is a long list of goods and services consumed or used by households regularly, as well as an estimated amount of money spent in South Africa, by South African households on these goods during the last quarter of 2018. So from October 2018 to December 2018 this is how much money South African consumers spent on a very wide variety of goods and services.
In total it is estimated that South African households spent R790.6 billion during the last quarter of 2018, which takes total household spending in South Africa during 2018 to R2.92 trillion (or about 55% of South Africa's total economy). While the amount spent by South African households sounds impressive, the growth in household spending is less than impressive, with spending of 2018 compared to spending in 2017 growing by a mere 0.6%. Hardly enough to kick start South Africa's ailing economy.
