In today's blog we take a look at the latest mining sales numbers published by Statistics South Africa. Ever wondered what is the value of SA's coal sales, or gold sales or platinum group metals (PGM) sales a month are worth? Well look no further. The answers to those questions are shown in the interactive graphic below.

Stacked minerals chart
The stacked chart below shows the rand value per month of various commodities/minerals sold. They include Gold, Coal, Platinum Group Metals (PGM), Manganese, Chromium to name but a few. The scroll chart at the top allow users to zoom in and out. The graphic and the data can be downloaded from the graphic too. Check the graphic below for more.
As can be seen from the graphic above sales of commodities/minerals in South Africa is dominated by Coal, Iron Ore, Platinum Group metals and Gold. The other minerals such as Chromium, Copper, Nickel, Manganese and other metallic minerals makes up a small portion to the overall sales of minerals in South Africa each month.
Below the average value of the various minerals sold per month for 2016 and the first half of 2017.

As the numbers above show, Iron ore, Manganese and Chromium are the big winners in terms of average monthly sales values for 2017 so far compared to the sales figures per month for 2016. Platinum, Nickel and Gold being the big losers who are all showing lower average sales values so for for 2017 compared to the sales values per month achieved in 2016.
Coal which is the biggest selling commodity in South Africa in terms of rand value of sales, showed a steady increase in sales values of 5.3% per month in 2017 compared to 2016 sales values. South Africa should no longer be seen as Gold country, but rather "Black Gold" country since Coal is by far SA's biggest selling commodity at this point in time, bringing in almost R1.8billion a month more than Platinum and R4.4billion more per month than Gold.
