So we all know crime is a big issue in South Africa, especially for potential tourists coming to or wanting to come to South Africa. But how are South Africans themselves experiencing crime? And which type of crime do they think is most prevalent in their area? We take a look at the results of the latest Victims of Crime Survey published by Statistics South Africa and break it down per metro and non-metro area per province.

So which type of crimes to households believe are most prevalent in their area?
People in the various provinces (metro and non metro areas) were asked which type of crime they think is most prevalent in their area. The summary below shows the percentage of people per area that thought Murder was most prevalent in their areas (the bolded numbers), the percentage that said no murder was not most prevalent in their area (the number in brackets), and the unspecified is the number in square brackets
So based on the numbers above 33.6% of people living in Manguang (the old Bloemfontein) believe that murder is the crime that is most prevalent in their area. 11.1% of people living in non metro areas in the province of Mpumalanga believed murder is the crime that is most prevalent in their areas. For South Africa as a whole 19.9% of people believed that murder is most prevalent in their area. It is no wonder then that foreigners are scared of visiting South Africa with one in five locals believing that murder is the most prevalent crime in people's respective areas.

The summary below shows the percentages as above, but this time the question was asked whether they believe House Robbery was the most prevalent crime in their area.
In the City of Cape Town 39% of people believed House Robbery is the most prevalent crime in their area, with 60.7% believe that House Robbery is not the most prevalent crime in the City of Cape Town. In the City of Johannesburg 46% of people believe House Robbery is the most prevalent crime in the metro of Johannesburg. But in the Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth area), 59.5% of people believe house robbery is the most prevalent crime in the Nelson Mandela Bay metropolitan area.
37.7% of South African's believe home invasions or house robberies is the most prevalent crime which is extremely concerning. If one cant feel safe in one's own home where exactly can one feel or be safe?

As can be seen from the above, the percent of people that believe vehicle theft is the most prevalent in their area is significantly lower than both murder and house robberies. We find the percentage of people in Ekurhuleni who believe vehicle theft is the most prevalent in their metro very interesting. News about various car "chop shops" in Tembisa township probably leads to increased perceptions of car thefts in the metro. The metro is connected to some of the main highways in South Africa, with the N1, R21, R24 and other main road transport all being close to Tembisa it is ideally located for car thieves to get around and away due to the vast road network the metro has access too. For South Africa as a whole 12.9% of the people believe that vehicle theft is the crime that is most prevalent.
